Why SRT is the subtitle format you want
SRT (SubRip Text) is the most universally accepted subtitle format in video production. Every major editor — Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, CapCut — can import SRT files and automatically place timed captions on the timeline. If you are repurposing TikTok content for YouTube, your website, or a client deliverable, SRT is the format that saves you from manually re-typing and re-syncing captions.
TokCaption extracts the accessible caption track from public TikTok videos and exports it as a standards-compliant SRT file with accurate timestamp boundaries. No audio transcription, no guessing — you get the exact captions the creator published.
What you need before starting
- A public TikTok video URL (the post must have an accessible caption track)
- A free TokCaption account — sign up here
- A video editor or subtitle tool that accepts SRT import
Find the public TikTok post you need subtitles from and copy its share link.
TokCaption detects the caption track and converts it into timestamped transcript data.
Select SRT from the export options. The file is formatted with sequence numbers, timecodes, and caption text.
Step 1: Copy the TikTok video URL
Open TikTok in your browser or mobile app. Navigate to the video whose captions you need as subtitles. Tap the share button and select Copy link. You should have a URL that looks like:
https://www.tiktok.com/@username/video/7123456789012345678
Step 2: Paste the URL into TokCaption
Log into your TokCaption workspace and paste the URL into the input field. Click Transcribe to start the extraction job. TokCaption will:
- Resolve the short link and fetch post metadata
- Check whether an accessible caption track exists
- Parse the caption data into structured segments with start and end timestamps
Processing typically completes in a few seconds. Once done, the transcript appears in your workspace with each segment displayed alongside its timecode.
Step 3: Export the transcript as SRT
With the transcript loaded, click the Export button and choose SRT from the format menu. TokCaption formats the output following the SRT specification:
- Sequential subtitle index numbers
- Timecodes in
HH:MM:SS,mmm --> HH:MM:SS,mmmformat - Caption text for each segment
- Blank-line separators between entries
The downloaded .srt file is ready to drag into your editor's subtitle import.
Importing SRT into popular video editors
Premiere Pro
Go to File → Import (or drag the .srt file into the Project panel). Premiere creates a captions track you can drop onto the timeline and style with the Essential Graphics panel.
DaVinci Resolve
Open the Media page, import the .srt file, then drag it to the subtitle track on the Edit page. Resolve parses the timecodes automatically.
CapCut (desktop)
Use Text → Import Subtitles and select your .srt file. CapCut maps each entry to a text layer on the timeline.
SRT vs VTT: which format to choose
TokCaption also supports VTT (WebVTT) export. Use SRT when your destination is a desktop video editor. Use VTT when you are embedding subtitles in a web-based HTML5 video player — for example, adding a <track> element to a video on your own site.
Both formats preserve the same timestamp accuracy. The only difference is syntax and browser/editor compatibility.
Tips for better SRT results
- Check timing in your editor — caption boundaries from TikTok are usually accurate, but some editors handle sub-second offsets slightly differently
- Split long lines — if a caption segment exceeds two lines of text, consider splitting it in a subtitle editor for readability
- Batch export for series — if you are pulling subtitles from multiple TikTok posts, use the bulk transcribe workflow and export each as SRT in one session

Frequently asked questions
What is an SRT file and why would I need one from a TikTok video?
SRT (SubRip Text) is the most widely supported subtitle format. Video editors like Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, and Final Cut Pro can import SRT files directly to add timed captions to a timeline without manual syncing.
Does TokCaption generate SRT files from audio?
No. TokCaption extracts the accessible caption track embedded in public TikTok posts and converts it into SRT format. It does not transcribe from audio or use speech recognition.
Can I edit the SRT file after exporting?
Yes. SRT is a plain-text format. You can open it in any text editor or subtitle tool to adjust timing, fix typos, or split long lines before importing into your video editor.
What if the TikTok video has no captions?
If no accessible caption track exists on the video, TokCaption returns a no-captions result. SRT export requires that the original post has caption data available.
Is VTT export also available?
Yes. TokCaption supports both SRT and VTT export. VTT is better suited for web video players (HTML5), while SRT is the standard for desktop editing software.
